In the Parish Church of St Mary, Thornbury, and the Church of St Paul, The Hackett, about twenty couples are married each year. Most weddings take place on Saturdays. Arrangements for weddings are usually made at our weekly surgery, which takes place every Thursday at 6.30pm in St Mary's Church. Fees associated with a normal church wedding in 2010 are £589, with organist £80, and banns (if required) £22, and then additional optional costs for choir/church bells (at St Mary’s) and flowers. The church arranges an evening of marriage preparation, and the priest taking the service will meet with the couple to discuss the details of their wedding.
There are legal restrictions as to whom we may marry. Either one or both persons must reside in the parish, or at least one of their parents must reside in the parish, or they must convince the Archbishop of Canterbury's Registrar that they have sufficiently strong connections with the parish for him to give permission. It is possible to arrange for a church service of thanksgiving and dedication of a civil marriage, when permission for a church wedding is not granted. Where some-one is divorced and their former partner is still living, then the Vicar is happy to meet and discuss the circumstances, advising accordingly.
For further details, either come to St Mary's Church any Thursday at 6.30pm, or e-mail David Primrose the Vicar. The Order for a Marriage Service - Common Worship can be downloaded in to MS-Word by clicking Marriage - Normal order of service
